Activity Ideas

You can use the sing-along version to teach the original lyrics to "Deck The Halls." Or try making new verses introducing other Christmas-time activities. 1

Spin The Christmas Tree
Before class, paint or color an empty plastic water bottle green. Glue a little yellow paper star to the top. In class, sit in a circle with the students. Show a Christmas picture card to all of the students and help them name it. After naming the card, each student gets to decorate the tree (the green bottle) with a colored sticker. Introduce six to eight picture cards in this manner. After introducing all of the cards, place the bottle on its side in the middle of the circle and spin it. When it stops spinning, the student the star is pointing at names a picture card that the teacher shows. Then, that student gets to spin the tree. Continue until the students are comfortable naming all of the cards. 2

Put The Star on Top!
Draw a large Christmas tree on the whiteboard and prepare ten blue magnets, ten red magnets, and ten yellow magnets (any colors are okay). Also prepare a simple Christmas star made of paper. Divide the class into three teams and assign each team a color. Quiz the students on a group of 20 picture cards. Show a picture card to the class. The student who names the card first gets to decorate the Christmas tree with a magnet of his team's color. For the final picture card, the student who answers first gets to put the star on top of the tree for his team. Each decoration is worth one point. The star is worth three points. Add up the points. The team with the most points at the end wins! 3
