Classroom Benefits

Take a quick trip to the zoo and meet the animals. This song leaves plenty of space for young learners to move about the room, acting as their favorite animals. It's great for introducing animals and action verbs and for letting young ones get up and move.

Activity Ideas

Using picture cards of the different animals, play "Animal Charades." Look at one of the cards but don't show the children. Ask, "What's this?" and then gesture the animal. The kids try to guess the animal. After a couple of turns, select a child to do the gestures. 1

With older students, play “Animal Charades,” but give only verbal hints (no gestures). “This animal swings from trees. It likes to eat bananas. it is brown and hairy. What is it?” 2

Make a pretend zoo! Place animal flashcards or stuffed animals around the room. Set up a pretend ticket booth, and collect admission with play money. When everyone is in the zoo, pretend to visit the various animals, stopping at each one and talking about it. When you're all finished, go to the pretend ice cream stand and enjoy some pretend ice cream together!
This activity leaves a lot of room for discussion, such as what kind of food do the animals eat? What is their home like? And can they swim? 3

For a whole zoo related lesson, read a storytime book like “Polar Bear, Polar Bear, What Do You Hear?” by Eric Carle, “Goodnight, Gorilla” by Peggy Rathmann, or “Dear Zoo” by Rod Campbell. 4
