Preparation

Before singing the song, introduce or review some shapes. "The Shape Song #1" practices circle, diamond, square, and heart, ("The Shape Song #2" practices triangle, rectangle, oval, and star). Try playing the song in the background as you review the shapes with flashcards, cut out shapes, or by drawing them on the whiteboard.

When you are ready to sing, make a circle and hold hands!

Classroom Benefits

This is a super simple song for practicing shape recognition. It's also a fun fingerplay as children get to create the different shapes with their hands or even their bodies. It teaches useful language for making and looking for objects.

Activity Ideas

For smaller classes, cut out 10 mini copies of each shape from colored paper. Place them all in the center of the room. Have the students sit around in a big circle. When the song says, "ready....GO!" everyone moves to the center of the room searching for the shape. At this point, you can pause the music and have everyone count their shapes, talk about the colors they found, etc. Alternatively, continue on with the song, and count up all the shapes and colors at the end. 1

If you make shape cutouts in blue, yellow, red, purple, pink, orange, green and brown, you can easily sing "I See Something Blue" or "I See Something Pink" as a follow up activity. 2

For a larger class, to avoid accidents, tape the shapes on the walls around the room and have the students run and touch or point to the shapes. 3

For older students, have them search for shapes around the room in everyday classroom objects. 4

Play this song while students are sitting and instead of having them find shapes, have them draw as many as they can during the musical part. Small whiteboards work great! 5

How many ways can you make shapes with your body? Make big shapes using your whole body, small shapes with your hands or tiny shapes with your fingers. 6

Have groups of students make shapes with their bodies on the carpet and take pictures. 7

Play this song in February when the classroom is decorated with hearts for Valentine's Day. Or give each student a hand stamp or sticker of a heart to find during that part of the song. 8
